PA12 is not flexible like TPU — it is a semi-rigid engineering plastic under normal loading. The 165% elongation at break means it can stretch significantly before fracturing, giving it outstanding toughness and impact resistance. In practice this translates to snap-fit features that bend and return without cracking, and parts that absorb sudden impacts that would shatter stiffer materials like ABS or PLA.
Yes — PA12 is one of the best FDM materials for plastic gears. Its self-lubricating surface reduces friction and wear between mating gear teeth without external lubrication. Combined with its high toughness and impact resistance, PA12 gears outlast PLA and ABS equivalents in moderate-load, moderate-speed applications. For very high-load applications, PA6-CF is a better choice despite its reduced ductility.
Yes. Although PA12 absorbs moisture far more slowly than PA6, it still requires pre-drying at 70°C for at least 12 hours before printing to achieve optimal surface quality and mechanical properties. We dry all PA12 filament before every job and store it in sealed low-humidity conditions between print runs.
PA12 has a heat deflection temperature of 100°C at 0.45 MPa — suitable for applications in warm environments, engine bays (away from direct heat), electronics enclosures, and consumer appliances. For applications exceeding 100°C, PA6-CF with its 164°C HDT is the correct choice.
PA12's low moisture absorption makes it far better suited for outdoor use than PA6 or PA66. It resists dimensional change in rain and humidity. However, PA12 has moderate UV resistance — for applications with prolonged direct sun exposure, a UV-protective coating or primer is recommended to prevent surface degradation over time.
