About PETG

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) sits between PLA and ABS in performance — combining PLA's easy printability with mechanical toughness and chemical resistance closer to ABS. With a 72°C heat deflection temperature and high impact strength, PETG handles environments and loads that PLA cannot.

We print your PETG parts on our standard FDM fleet — no enclosure or special preparation required, though we still control bed adhesion and cooling to ensure excellent surface finish. Its 1.27 g/cm³ density and semi-flexible nature give it outstanding layer adhesion, minimising delamination risk in functional parts.

PETG also has excellent chemical resistance to many solvents and moisture, and stronger UV stability than ABS — making it a practical choice for outdoor-adjacent applications, containers, and mechanical parts requiring durability.

Mechanical Parts Gears, brackets, and functional prototypes needing toughness
Containers & Enclosures Storage boxes, cases, and liquid-resistant housings
Outdoor-Adjacent Parts Covered outdoor fixtures with moisture and UV exposure
Snap-Fit Assemblies Impact-resistant snap fits and living hinges
Jigs & Fixtures Chemical-resistant tooling for industrial workshops

Not sure if PETG is right for your application?

For rigid, high-detail display parts, PLA is easier to finish. For higher heat resistance, ABS or Hyper ABS perform better. For maximum stiffness and strength, PA6-CF is our top engineering material.

Frequently Asked Questions

PETG is ideal for functional parts that need to survive impact, moisture, or chemical exposure — mechanical components, containers, snap-fit assemblies, and outdoor-adjacent fixtures. It's a strong middle ground between PLA's ease of printing and ABS's engineering performance.
PETG prints almost as easily as PLA (no enclosure needed) while offering significantly higher impact strength (43.7 kJ/m² vs PLA's typical 8-16 kJ/m²) and heat resistance (72°C vs ~50°C for PLA). Compared to ABS, PETG has better chemical and UV resistance and doesn't require an enclosure, though ABS still has a slight edge in heat resistance (84°C) and post-processing options like acetone smoothing.
PETG raw material is widely used in food packaging (it's the same base polymer as many plastic bottles). Printed parts can be considered food-contact-safe when printed on clean, dedicated nozzles and post-processed appropriately, though the layered structure of FDM prints means they are harder to fully sanitise than injection-moulded parts. We recommend a food-safe coating for direct, repeated food contact.
No — PETG has significantly lower thermal shrinkage than ABS, so it prints reliably without an enclosure on our standard FDM machines. The main print challenge with PETG is stringing (fine wisps of plastic between parts) and slight over-adhesion to the bed, both of which we control through calibrated retraction settings and print surface preparation.
PETG has good UV resistance and low water absorption (0.48%), making it suitable for covered or semi-outdoor applications. For parts requiring maximum UV stability and long-term outdoor exposure in direct sunlight, we recommend ASA instead, which is specifically engineered for weather resistance.
